The Bedside Drawer Edit: 4 Things Worth Keeping Within Reach

The Bedside Drawer Edit: 4 Things Worth Keeping Within Reach

Have you ever been right in the middle of a moment and realized the one thing you need is approximately three rooms away?

Suddenly somebody is digging through the bathroom cabinet, checking a drawer, or wandering around the house trying to remember where you put that bottle you KNOW you bought. Meanwhile, the other person is lying there scrolling their phone, and the mood is quietly packing its bags.

Nothing says romance quite like, "Hang on, I think it's under the sink."

I've been in the intimacy space for 11 years, and my advice on this one is simple: properly stock your bedside drawer.

Not the drawer where random charging cords, old receipts, and three pens that don't work go to die. I'm talking about a little stash of things you actually use that can make intimacy easier, more comfortable, and a whole lot less interrupted. Even better if they're all stashed in a special bag for easy access.

Why a drawer matters more than you'd think

Arousal runs on momentum. For a lot of us, it takes a while to get out of our heads and into the moment, and a five-minute scavenger hunt is a great way to land right back at the starting line.

A stocked drawer keeps you in it. Everything you might want is one arm's reach away, so nobody has to leave the bed, turn on a light, or announce a search party. You can even grab your go bag ahead of time, so you're mega prepared.

And no, you don't need to fill it with everything you own. A few well-chosen essentials are plenty.

1. A lube you already know you like

Comfort is always worth keeping within reach, and nobody wants to go searching for lube once things are already getting interesting.

The key words are "already know you like." The drawer is not where you audition a brand-new formula. Keep your tried-and-true favorite here and do your experimenting on a night when you have time to be curious.

A few bestie tips:

  • When in doubt, go water-based. It plays nicely with silicone toys and condoms. Silicone lube can damage silicone toys, and oil-based products break down latex.
  • Pick a bottle you can open one-handed. A pump or flip cap beats a screw-off lid every single time.
  • Lube is not a sign something's wrong. Stress, hormones, medications, and plain old Tuesday can all change how your body responds. Lube just makes everything feel better.

2. One easy favorite

Think of a small vibrator or another toy you already enjoy. The word doing the heavy lifting here is "EASY"

This isn't the place for something that requires an instruction manual and 45 minutes of setup. The big, fancy, special-occasion pieces can live in the closet. Your drawer pick should be small, simple to turn on in the dark, and charged.

Two things that will save you some grief:

  • Give it its own pouch. It stays clean and doesn't collect drawer lint.
  • Use the travel lock if it has one. Nobody needs a mystery buzzing sound at 2 a.m.

3. Something for cleanup

Keep toy cleaner, wipes, a small towel, or whatever you normally use nearby so cleanup doesn't become tomorrow's problem.

Because here's what really happens when cleanup means a hike to the bathroom: it doesn't happen. And tomorrow-you deserves better than that.

Cleaning your toys after every use keeps them lasting longer and keeps your body happy. Let them dry completely before they go back in the drawer. For more on the after part, read Don't Skip This Part After Sexy Time

4. One little extra

Massage oil, body lotion, a blindfold, or something playful that can turn an ordinary night into, "Well... since it's right here."

This is the fun slot, so rotate it. Swap in something new every so often and the drawer does a little flirting on your behalf.

One quick PSA: massage oil is for massages. It's not a stand-in for lube, and oils don't get along with latex condoms.

What can live somewhere else

Anything that needs setup. Anything you haven't touched in six months. Backups of backups. And yes, the dead pens.

If the drawer is so full you have to dig, you've just recreated the under-the-sink problem eighteen inches from the bed.

Got little ones who treat every drawer like a treasure hunt? Tuck everything into a zip pouch or a small lockable box inside the drawer. Still within reach for you, a lot less interesting for them.

The part people forget: clean out the drawer

Every few months, give the drawer a quick once-over. Tie it to something you already do, like changing the clocks or flipping the mattress, and it takes about five minutes.

  • Check expiration dates. Yes, lube expires, and so do oils and cleaners.
  • Charge anything rechargeable so it's ready when you are.
  • Give your toys a proper clean, even the ones that have just been sitting.
  • Replace anything that's changed color, smell, or texture.
  • Get rid of the things you never actually reach for.

Easier is sexier

Your bedside drawer doesn't need to look like a showroom. It should make your life easier.

Because sometimes better intimacy isn't about adding something new or doing something wildly different. It's simply removing the tiny inconveniences that interrupt the moment.

Keep the things you love nearby, make them easy to grab, and let the drawer handle the rest.
